Temporary Student (TSS) (this category is known as a Tier 4 General Student visa, formerly known as a 'student' or 'child student')
Visiting an institution to take up a short course of study. This can be for one, two years and three months in length. There are no points required but the applicant will need to give a good explanation why they do not want a Short Stay Student Visa which would only allow study for six months maximum rather than the full duration of the intended stay. The cost for this type of application was £148.50 in January 2007 and rises with inflation from then on; at present it is £148.50 plus VAT (£178.20 overall) for a single entry visa valid for either six months or eighteen months;the visas available under this category have a validity of twelve months, although there may also be some six month visas issued. These TSS visas were due to cease being issued from April 2008 until March 2010 when new immigration rules introduced by the previous government took effect, replacing all types of visitor permits other than those needed solely for business purposes such as those for training courses lasting less than sixty days. In fact these changes appear never to have taken place so visitors who qualify remain able apply just as before except that their costs have risen slightly since last year – see above table for details – whilst applicants whose plans change during their visit now find themselves subject to much stricter rules designed mainly to prevent overstayers remaining here illegally after expiry date. On arrival you must show your passport containing both visa sticker AND immigration stamp otherwise airport officials might refuse entry without warning!
This applies even if applying via airside route despite holding valid biometric residence permit & travel document allowing multiple entries into UK within period stated e.g. four years/ten years etc! For example someone granted four-year permission would still require both visa stickers showing same dates as immigration stamps placed alongside each other on page inside front cover where coloured borders meet forming triangle shape (i.e.
